Rap snacks. Crispy at under 100 beats per minute.
My friend Deb, who understands my fascination with quirky cultural things, sent me two bags of “The Official Snack of Hip-Hop.” That snack goes under the name Rap Snacks, which already confuses me because I’m not clear on the distinctions and intersections of rap and hip hop, even after reading this.
Dirt McGirt is no longer with us, so he goes on the list of other deceased celebrity endorsers. The “Think responsibly” suggestion on the bag of his sour cream & onion flavored chips has a certain post mortem wisdom.
All the Rap Snacks flavors carry a positive message (”Stay in school,” Love your neighbor,” “Stay away from guns”) and feature a different artist, most of whom are not dead. Branding a product as part of a musical genre or as some describe it, a cultural movement, is interesting at a minimum.
