Advertising: the middle school view.
Kymber, the engaging proprietress of the Thinking in Vain blog, has a series of posts casually describing her experience discussing advertising with middle school students. It’s a fun and interesting read, and as Kymber notes, there is meaningful thought beyond the traditional teen vocabulary of “awesome” or “cool.” Here’s the link to Part 1. There are four, as you will see from the main page today. There’s even audio of the students singing the Snickers jingle.

A very entertaining read! I could not help but remember that 7th grade was a serious low point in my life. I went to a middle school that was 6-8th grade. By 7th grade the novelty of middle school was long gone and I did not rule the school as an 8th grader. I had a mouth full of braces (with the bright pink rubber bands) and the obligatory “boy hair cut” that all girls suffered at some point. (You know…the haircut that made us totally insecure about about ever cutting our hair short again.) My skin was horrible, my makeup was worse, and my hormones rivaled those of a woman about to give birth. I wore some seriously hideous clothes. I can’t show you what they look like because I have banished all photos during this era to a live firepit in my parent’s backyard, but let’s just say shoulder pads are incredibly flamable. I hated boys. (Gag me with a spoon) I loved boys. (He looks JUST like Kirk Cameron) And like…oh my gosh…girls can be so mean! (Did you see her flat hair? Give her some aquanet and a rat comb!)
As much as I like to think this horrible existance was unique to me…I am pretty sure all kids are like this in 7th grade only with slightly different challenges. I venture to say everyone looks back on their 7th grade preferences and wonders….What was I THINKING?
So…..I find the fact that anyone wants to know what they think about anything completely facinating!
Betty,
Your very apt decription of your physical attributes in the seventh grade give hope to us all. Didn’t you go on to star in your own hour-long mega-hit comedy on Thursday nights on ABC? You go, girl. Way to overcome adversity!
